Punjab Government Shunts Top Amritsar Cop Amid Social Media Misinformation Row

Department clarifies terror suspects targeted protesters rather than participating in Jantar Mantar demonstration

Amritsar, August 7 — Senior IPS officer Gurpreet Singh Bhullar was relieved of his duties as Amritsar Police Commissioner on Friday following widespread debate surrounding edited press conference footage. The state home department instructed Bhullar to report to the state police headquarters, entrusting interim charge to DIG Harmanbir Singh Gill.

The official action comes in the wake of viral social media posts that inaccurately claimed local police had established ties between protesters at Jantar Mantar and hostile intelligence modules.

Rebutting the narrative, state police representatives declared that the media clips were selectively trimmed and published alongside misleading commentary. Officials affirmed that the original statement only highlighted that detained operatives had surveyed the Delhi protest site to execute a planned attack on the demonstrators.

“The police spokesperson said Bhullar had stated that some of the arrested persons had visited Jantar Mantar, conducted reconnaissance, and allegedly planned to target the protesters with petrol bombs,” the department affirmed in an official statement.

State authorities maintained that cyber units are actively investigating the origin of the manipulated digital content to press formal charges under relevant statutory provisions.
