Chandigarh: Hundreds of diabetes patients across Punjab have avoided limb amputations through free, timely medical interventions provided under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. Over the last eight months, the state government funded treatment for 560 patients presenting with non-healing ulcers, nerve damage, and severe foot infections, incurring a total expenditure of 1.32 crore rupees.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh stated that the government remains committed to building a compassionate health system where financial constraints never delay life-saving or mobility-preserving treatments. He emphasized that early diagnosis and funded surgical access are key to protecting patients from life-altering complications caused by reduced circulation and nerve impairment.

The program’s breakdown shows that surgical management accounted for 126 cases costing 44.55 lakh rupees, while medical management was provided to 123 individuals. The scheme also covered specialized procedures such as toe and below-knee surgeries, wound dressing regimens, skin grafts, and critical care management for systemic complications like severe sepsis and anemia.

Patients who underwent surgery and recovery under the initiative reported that free access to continuous medical care enabled them to overcome aggressive infections. Health authorities affirmed that the scheme will continue to expand its reach, ensuring every resident has access to essential specialized treatments without facing economic hardship.
