Chandigarh, Sept 28: The ongoing transformation of India’s rail network reached a new milestone as 75 redeveloped stations, including key locations across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, were dedicated under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Punjab stations at SAS Nagar (Mohali), Jalandhar Cantt, Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Sri Muktsar Sahib have finished comprehensive modernization, joining Kalka and Narwana in Haryana as well as Amb Andaura in Himachal Pradesh as fully redeveloped transit hubs. The regional momentum extends into Jammu and Kashmir, where extensive works are either completed or actively progressing across four strategic locations.
At Budgam, work on the primary circulating area, parking facilities, and approach roads has concluded, alongside ongoing construction of a new executive lounge, booking counters, waiting areas, and a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge. Jammu Tawi has added a new secondary entry building, platform shelters, electrical infrastructure, and accessible ramps. Similarly, Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station has finalized works on its central building, approach roads, restrooms, and waiting rooms, while Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station undergoes preliminary master-planning.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to systematically transform 1,340 stations nationwide into modern transport centers featuring region-specific architectural elements, sustainable design, improved multimodal connectivity, and barrier-free access for Divyangjan passengers.
Funding for the initiative is managed zone-wise under the Zonal Railways’ Plan Head-53 allocation for Customer Amenities. With 261 total stations transformed since the scheme’s launch in December 2022, the program represents one of the largest infrastructure modernization efforts undertaken by the Union Government to enhance overall passenger experience.
