Chandigarh, Oct 5: In a direct challenge to the High Court’s order, the Punjab government announced it will approach the Supreme Court to contest handing over the probe into administrative “cash-for-transfers” allegations to the CBI.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema confirmed the Cabinet’s decision during a press briefing in Chandigarh, emphasizing that state rules already limit unconsented CBI operations within Punjab. Cheema affirmed that the state would present its legal objections before the top court, maintaining that existing mechanisms should address official matters without external agency interference.
The High Court had ordered the CBI investigation in response to public interest litigation citing correspondence from central enforcement bodies regarding alleged bribery networks affecting official postings and tenders. State authorities declared that the administration is preparing its appeal to seek an immediate stay on the High Court directive from the Supreme Court.
