SC Rejects Sweeping Transport Shutdowns for National Capital

Government agrees to replace full metro restrictions with regulated transit measures

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Oct 9: The Supreme Court rejected sweeping transit closures ordered across the Delhi Metro and regional railway networks, instructing authorities to prioritize public convenience while managing security preparations. Addressing restrictions imposed in anticipation of capital-wide demonstrations, the bench declared that security measures should target crowd control rather than imposing full movement halts. The court noted that shutting down essential public facilities causes widespread hardship for workers, students, and citizens unconnected to political gatherings.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta affirmed that central authorities would reconsider the blanket prohibition and permit train operations in a calibrated, regulated manner. Operating on these assurances, the bench directed officials to publish updated commuting guidelines to ensure citizens retain reliable access to public transit options across the city.
