Rupnagar, Oct 19: Conservation initiatives at the iconic Sutlej riverbank site in Rupnagar received a major push as Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu committed Rs 10 lakh from MPLADS funds to develop essential facilities for visiting delegations and tourists. The initiative comes just days prior to the 195th anniversary of the strategic meeting between Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Governor General Lord William Bentinck. Sandhu stated his intention to pursue the establishment of a permanent diplomatic heritage memorial at the site through continuous engagement with central authorities.
While reviewing the ongoing maintenance works alongside representatives of various community bodies, Sandhu emphasized the need to educate future generations about the strategic vision and administrative legacy of the Sikh Empire.

“Safeguarding such landmarks remains a collective responsibility and pointed out that well-maintained heritage points naturally boost regional tourism,” he said.
The lawmaker had previously brought the demand for a dedicated memorial to the floor of the upper house during Parliament’s Zero Hour session in August.
The project roadmap includes a state-of-the-art museum complex alongside interactive digital exhibits focusing on the Maharaja’s governance and contribution to cultural preservation.
Sandhu maintained that such community-led conservation movements embody the spirit of preserving legacy while driving local regional growth. The visiting parliamentarian also spent time discussing visitor logistics with prominent local figures and civil society leaders before offering prayers at Gurdwara Sri Tibbi Sahib for the welfare of the region.
