CHANDIGARH, April 16 — With temperatures rising and reports of water shortages surfacing across the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) on Tuesday launched its annual drive to prevent the misuse of potable water, serving notices to 180 residents and issuing challans to eight violators.
The drive, which will continue from April 15 to June 30, targets activities such as watering lawns, cleaning courtyards, and washing vehicles with hosepipes. These actions can attract a fine of Rs 5,788. In cases where MC teams find leaking taps, tanks, water meters, or coolers, notices are issued first, followed by fines if repairs are not made within two days.
Acting on the directions of MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, civic body officials conducted inspections between 5:30 am and 8:30 am. “The teams documented several violations using photos and videos as proof,” an official said.
On the first day of the drive, multiple households were found using drinking water to wash cars and courtyards. Eight of them were immediately fined. “We are taking this issue seriously due to the growing water crisis in many sectors. Non-compliance after notice will lead to penalties,” the official added.
The MC urged residents to conserve water and report leakages in their locality to avoid further shortages.
