New Delhi, April 21 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday mourned the death of Pope Francis, describing the 88-year-old pontiff as a “beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage” who held deep affection for the people of India.
The Pope, who led the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, passed away this morning at the Vatican following prolonged illness.
“Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” PM Modi said in a condolence message.
“In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community.
Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage by millions across the world.”
Recalling his meeting with the Pope at the G7 summit in Italy last year, the Prime Minister said he had been inspired by the Pope’s dedication to inclusive development.
“He devoted himself from a young age to the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope,” said Modi. “His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”
In 2022, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) had formally approached the Prime Minister regarding a possible visit by the Pope to India.
CBCI President Mar Andrews Thazhath said the Prime Minister had shown support for the idea and urged the Church to facilitate the visit at the earliest. However, the trip could not materialize due to the Pope’s declining health.
