Stockholm, Oct 8: The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that Canadian classicist and writer Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, recognizing her innovative contributions to modern poetry and fiction.

Carson has built a distinguished career by bridging classical scholarship with contemporary form, producing a diverse array of work ranging from opera libretti and critical essays to translated Greek tragedy. The Academy highlighted her ability to engage in playful dialogue with classical traditions to pioneer entirely new literary structures, exemplified by hybrid works like Autobiography of Red.

The $1.2 million award places Carson among the most distinguished voices in modern literature. While the Swedish Academy’s selections have historically generated debate among critics and readers regarding snubs and unconventional picks, Carson’s win highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to celebrating form-bending art and broadening global literary horizons.
