Chandigarh Golf League tees off today

Chandigarh, Sept. 25 — The fourth edition of the Chandigarh Golf League (CGL) begins Thursday at the Chandigarh Golf Club, with 21 teams and 378 golfers set to compete over the next five weeks. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will inaugurate the event.

The league-cum-knockout format features 75 matches, with teams finalised through owner picks and a player auction. A prize purse of ₹37 lakh — up 10 percent from last year — will be on offer. The group stage will be followed by a super 12 knockout in October, while the top four teams will gain direct entry into the quarterfinals.

Organising committee chairman Gursimrat Singh Jawandha said the CGL has grown steadily in stature. “This season will be the biggest yet,” he noted. Club president Ravibir Singh added that the course had been restored “to pristine condition despite recent heavy rains.”

Tournament director Brandon de Souza, who has overseen international events, described the CGL as unique. “After having conducted events in more than four countries, I can safely say that the CGL is the most competitive out of all and the quality of golf on show here is the best,” he said.

Last year, the third edition of the league ended with Captain’s 18 and Partee Panthers sharing the trophy as joint champions. Organisers expect this year’s expanded competition to further raise the bar for club-level golf in the region.
