Mumbai, April 20: Anurag Basu has voiced his support for Ranbir Kapoor’s casting as Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s “Ramayana,” describing the actor’s choice as a bold move for his career. In a recent statement, the director asserted that Kapoor has effectively met the high expectations associated with playing the revered mythological figure.
The director maintained that Kapoor’s look in the film—which showcases both the warrior and exiled aspects of the character—highlights his versatility. Basu stated that despite the inevitable scrutiny that comes with such a part, the actor’s portrayal appears to be highly accurate based on early visuals.
“It takes a lot of courage for an actor to say yes, because people put actors in boxes in our industry,” Basu declared. He affirmed that Kapoor has a natural affinity for difficult roles and has successfully avoided being confined to a single genre by taking on this epic narrative.
The ambitious project, backed by a significant budget of ₹1,600 crore, features a star-studded cast including Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. While the VFX and overall presentation have received varied responses from the audience, industry figures like Basu have emphasized the artistic merit of the lead actor’s commitment.
Production officials noted that the film aims to blend mythological depth with modern cinematic technology. Basu maintained that he is eagerly anticipating the full release, asserting that the actor’s transformation is one of the most compelling aspects of the production so far.
