Government-Protester Pact Paves Way for Release of Detained Hansi Activists

HANSI, AUGUST 18: The legal impasse surrounding the August 15 Hansi protest standoff ended after police authorities removed primary offences from the original FIR, allowing ten farmer leaders and activists to walk free from Bhondsi jail in Gurugram. The resolution was brokered during high-level talks between Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and a five-member committee representing the Jeevan Kundu agitation.

“We had pleaded before the court yesterday as well,” stated Advocate Vikram Mittal, counsel for the farm leaders, explaining that the judicial court acted on the modified police filing to grant immediate bail.

Mittal affirmed that the initial charges, which included provisions for assault on public servants, acts affecting national honour, and attempt to murder, were unsustainable under scrutiny.

“The sections had been imposed without any basis and were excessive and unwarranted,” Mittal stated, noting that police officials dropped the stringent charges after administrative review.

A delegation member detailing the outcomes of the Chandigarh meeting stated that the state administration agreed to clear all agitation-related cases registered over the past fortnight.

“The government has agreed to withdraw the cases registered during the agitation between August 4 and 15,” a committee representative declared, confirming that impounded property and electronics would also be restored to owners.

The consensus reached at the Chief Minister’s residence included assurances regarding the immediate arrest of key suspect Ramesh Sharma and targeted financial assistance for Kundu’s widow. With the release of activists Shamsher Nambardar, Suresh Koth, and eight others, the demonstration committee resolved to perform Kundu’s final rites at his native village, bringing an end to the fortnight-long standoff.
