GURUGRAM, August 25: The latest road collapse at IFFCO Chowk has exposed severe, unaddressed systemic risks plaguing Gurugram’s master utility lines. Monday’s service road cave-in closely mirrors a series of previous structural failures at the exact same junction, including an August 2021 incident where a damaged sewage drain triggered the total collapse of the flyover’s retaining wall during a downpour.
The disaster strikes months after explicit administrative alarms were raised regarding the intersection’s stability. In December, the GMDA sent an official warning to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) highlighting a critical risk to the IFFCO flyover, specifically citing a 20-year-old master water pipeline running beneath the retaining wall that could compromise the flyover and sever the city’s water supply if fractured.
This latest cave-in also follows closely on the heels of other recent infrastructure scares at the junction, including the emergence of a massive 40-foot-long crack in the expansion joint of the parallel flyover which required emergency sealing by the NHAI. As traffic police work to manage the immediate gridlock through localized barricading, residents face a familiar pattern of delayed systemic remediation while vital sub-surface utilities continue to erode beneath the city’s heaviest transit corridors.
