Haryana Assembly Approves Panel for Women’s Participation

Opposition Questions Timing of Resolution Amid CM's Praise for Reform

Chandigarh, April 29: The Haryana Vidhan Sabha has unanimously passed a resolution to constitute a dedicated Women’s Empowerment Committee, a move the government asserts will strengthen female leadership in governance. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini maintained that the committee would serve as a vital platform for reviewing equality measures and ensuring that women play a central role in the state’s development.

The newly formed committee will consist of nine members, with a primary requirement that the majority of the seats be held by women. Chief Minister Saini stated that the panel will have a one-year mandate to evaluate policy effectiveness and suggest improvements for women’s representation. He affirmed his confidence in Speaker Harvindra Kalyan’s ability to oversee these advancements, stating that the Speaker has maintained high standards of decorum during these legislative shifts.

The Chief Minister asserted that the Haryana government is committed to the concept of women-led development. He declared that the committee’s work would directly contribute to national goals of social and political empowerment. According to the administration, the initiative is designed to address specific challenges faced by women in different professional and social spheres throughout Haryana.

Contrasting this view, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Leader of Opposition, categorized the government’s actions as “false propaganda.” Following a Congress boycott of the session, Hooda stated that the Assembly should prioritize urgent public concerns over symbolic resolutions. He maintained that the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was notified in April, should have been acted upon much earlier. Hooda asserted that the government’s current focus appears to be more about political posturing than genuine empowerment.
