KARNAL, AUGUST 31 — The Karnal Municipal Corporation conducted large-scale waste removal operations across key areas of the city on Monday, lifting nearly 150 tonnes of accumulated garbage amid an ongoing strike by municipal sanitation staff. The municipal drive aims to mitigate hygiene concerns brought about by the 26-day protest over contractual regularisation.
Demonstrating workers staged a funeral procession and effigy burning targeting Minister of State Krishan Kumar Bedi outside the Mini Secretariat to draw attention to their service conditions. Protests led by trade union representatives, including Sarv Karamchari Sangh President Sushil Gurjar and Sanitation Workers Association President Raj Kumar, asserted that repeated appeals for dialogue regarding employee regularisation have yielded no concrete resolution from the government so far.
Addressing the urban sanitation situation, Municipal Commissioner Saloni Sharma stated that dedicated machinery and personnel have been deployed to clear roadsides and maintain public hygiene. She noted that routine door-to-door waste collection services continue to function, encouraging citizens to cooperate with municipal collection teams and avoid littering while administrative efforts to handle civic sanitation remain underway.
