A direct railway connection extending to the Indian Ocean is under feasibility study by Russian authorities to hedge against transit hazards in major sea lanes. The proposed freight network would offer an alternative route for commercial movement between Russia and India while lessening reliance on traditional maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus.
Addressing potential transit options, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin stated that a rail link to the Indian Ocean should be thoroughly examined. Risks associated with key maritime corridors might necessitate developing overland routes running through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, he asserted, emphasizing that any infrastructure alignment facilitating seamless connectivity with India would fulfill strategic objectives.
The proposal reflects a broader effort across Eurasia to construct resilient land corridors capable of withstanding external shipping disruptions. While the project remains at an exploratory feasibility stage, implementation would require extensive multilateral agreements, infrastructure investments, and regional coordination across participating nations.
In discussions regarding domestic economic development, Khusnullin also highlighted the growth potential of Russia’s building sector. The construction industry is already equipped to manage an extra one trillion rubles on an annual basis, he noted, adding that sustained financial commitments over a five-year horizon would enable the sector to expand overall building capacity.
