Chandigarh, August 10: Punjab’s public health framework has provided ₹316.50 crore worth of medical relief across its ten most utilized surgical and medical procedures through the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana.
Designed to relieve families of steep medical debts, the government initiative has delivered 2,44,468 cashless treatments targeting non-communicable and long-term health conditions. The figures reflect rising healthcare demands in line with global observations by the World Health Organisation regarding chronic diseases such as heart ailments, diabetes, and renal complications.
The range of covered procedures demonstrates Punjab’s effort to build a healthcare structure capable of supporting patients through complex, high-cost medical situations, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh asserted. These figures represent thousands of families who received quality treatment without worrying about hospital bills, the minister declared, adding that the initiative ensures financial constraints never prevent access to lifelong dialysis, joint replacement, or critical heart procedures.
According to data compiled by the State Health Agency, renal care recorded the largest volume of assistance. Chronic haemodialysis accounted for 1,87,656 individual care sessions costing over ₹30.65 crore, allowing kidney patients to undergo regular therapy without financial disruption.
Specialized surgical care comprised the remainder of the top ten procedures. Surgeries included 17,698 laparoscopic gall bladder removals, 10,751 total knee replacements, and 911 cementless total hip replacements. Maternal health services covered 9,317 emergency and elective Caesarean section deliveries.
Critical cardiovascular interventions saw 8,734 patients receive percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty alongside diagnostic angiography, while 554 patients underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. In specialized urological treatment, the scheme funded 5,770 percutaneous nephrolithotomy procedures for kidney stones and 2,247 lower ureter operations, in addition to 830 radical surgeries.
By removing financial barriers for long-term recovery, total joint restoration, and institutional maternal delivery, the initiative continues to strengthen social security protections across the state.
