National Fuel Costs Climb Again

Oil marketing companies institute additional price increases to combat daily deficits

New Delhi, May 19: Retail commercial fuel prices advanced by roughly 90 paise per litre on Tuesday as state-run oil companies continued adjusting domestic tariffs to mirror global supply constraints.

The update represents the second price escalation this week, following a sharper 3-rupee per litre increase implemented on May 15. Due to varying local value-added taxes, regional pump prices adjusted across the country, pushing petrol to 107.59 rupees in Mumbai, 109.70 rupees in Kolkata, and 104.49 rupees in Chennai.

The consecutive pricing updates follow an extended structural freeze on commercial fuel rates originally established in April 2022 to maintain price stability for local consumers. Industry analysts maintained that global energy dynamics shifted significantly after regional conflicts in West Asia disrupted major maritime shipping lanes, driving international crude prices up by more than half.

While private fuel corporations like Nayara Energy and Shell began raising their commercial pump tariffs earlier this spring, state retail firms delayed adjustments until the recent state elections concluded. Economists asserted that the twin price adjustments will likely exert upward pressure on domestic inflation indexes, noting that the country’s Wholesale Price Index recently climbed to an elevated 42-month high of 8.3 percent.

“The price hike appears calibrated – enough to partially ease margin pressure on oil companies without creating a major inflationary shock,” an energy industry source stated regarding the regulatory strategy.

To manage the broader financial impact of elevated energy imports, several state administrations have initiated strict consumption policies for public employees. Government departments received formal directives to minimize non-essential travel and move routine business to virtual meeting formats to limit national fuel consumption.
