Opposition Walkout Follows Heated Showdown in Punjab Assembly

Treasury Bench Targets Sukhpal Khaira as Congress Protests State Drug Issues

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Oct 23: High drama unfolded in the Punjab Assembly as lawmakers passed a privilege motion against Sukhpal Singh Khaira amidst protests from the opposition. Proceedings faced immediate disruption during Question Hour as Congress members staged a walkout after demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over governance and security concerns.

Treasury bench members strongly defended the administration while challenging the opposition’s stance. Finance Minister Harpal Cheema declared in the House that the government remains committed to tackling illegal activities, asserting that Khaira himself faced allegations regarding complicity in a narcotics matter. The treasury bench maintained that the opposition’s disruptions were intended to distract from these accusations.

Outside the House chamber, CLP leader Partap Singh Bajwa and PPCC chief Pargat Singh led a gathering of black-robed Congress members in continued demonstrations. Protesters presented a letter of condemnation, stating that the government failed to resolve pressing challenges affecting the public. Officials confirmed that legislative business resumed following the opposition’s departure from the House.
