Orange alert for heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane

by TheReportingTimes

MUMBAI, Sept. 27 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane districts, forecasting heavy rainfall from Saturday to Monday. Citizens have been advised to take precautionary measures as the showers could disrupt normal life.

The IMD said rainfall activity is expected to intensify on Sunday, with moderate to heavy downpours likely in several parts of the city. “Residents are advised to avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging and follow instructions issued by local authorities,” an IMD spokesperson said.

Over the past week, Mumbai has already received intermittent heavy rainfall, causing waterlogging in certain areas and slowing down traffic. Civic authorities have urged people to remain cautious while commuting and to stay updated on weather alerts.

The orange alert signals that heavy rain may lead to disruption in daily life, including traffic delays, potential flooding, and power outages. The civic administration has instructed municipal teams to remain on standby to clear waterlogged areas and ensure public safety.

Meteorologists said the heavy rainfall is linked to a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea combined with monsoon winds, which is likely to affect the western coast over the weekend. While conditions are expected to ease after Monday, residents have been advised to stay alert for updated forecasts.

“The public should refrain from venturing out during peak rainfall hours and avoid driving through submerged roads,” the spokesperson added.
