Over 1 Crore Screened as Punjab Tackles Hypertension Burden

State medical network links 24 lakh patients to free treatment and wellness programs

CHANDIGARH, May 18, 2026 – A comprehensive state healthcare initiative has successfully screened more than 1 crore citizens for high blood pressure as Punjab marks World Hypertension Day with expanded diagnostic and treatment services.

The initiative utilizes primary screening at neighborhood clinics, free public lifestyle classes, and financial protection for emergency hospital care to lower the state’s cardiovascular risk. Health officials reported that the combined mechanism aims to reduce diagnostic delays, which historically led to fatal outcomes due to the financial fears of patients.

Medical data reveals that middle-aged and senior citizens constitute the largest block of hypertension cases in the region. The State Health Agency noted cases involving a 94-year-old patient in Gurdaspur and a 98-year-old patient in S.A.S. Nagar, illustrating the extensive prevalence among elderly populations.

The highest volume of cases spanning both men and women appeared in the Patiala, S.A.S. Nagar, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, and Faridkot districts. Furthermore, data from Amritsar and Ludhiana pointed to a dense cluster of cases among women aged 50 to 77.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh maintained that the state healthcare network is structured to deliver sustained, long-term monitoring for diagnosed individuals.

“Monthly follow-ups, free medicines, and timely referral ensure continuous care, with strong rural-urban primary healthcare coverage,” Dr. Balbir Singh declared.

The health minister asserted that the 990 operational Aam Aadmi Clinics serve as the frontline defense by evaluating any citizen over the age of 30, a strategy that has already connected 24 lakh people to active treatment protocols.

For critical cases where high blood pressure triggers sudden medical crises, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana offers cashless hospitalization. The state-backed program absorbs the financial costs of treatments for strokes, kidney failure, and heart failures, protecting middle-class households and pensioners from severe debt.

Simultaneously, the administration is utilizing behavioral interventions via the CM di Yogshala project to curb the disease before hospital care becomes necessary. The health drive currently manages more than 10,600 daily yoga sessions across Punjab, helping nearly 3 lakh citizens utilize exercise and meditation to regulate their vascular health.

Cardiology experts warned that changing daily habits have accelerated the timeline of cardiovascular damage, making early intervention critical. Dr. Saurabh Sharma, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, stated that poor diet, lack of exercise, and high stress are shifting the disease demographics downward.

“What we are seeing now is not just high blood pressure, but its complications arriving earlier than before, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease,” Dr. Sharma affirmed.

Dr. Sharma stated that in acute hypertensive situations, immediate medical care is the primary variable determining survival. He declared that the presence of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana ensures patients seek rapid clinical evaluation rather than waiting out symptoms at home due to medical costs.
