Chandigarh, August 27: The Haryana government confirmed a 17 per cent increase in extortion cases across the state, attributing the surge to international callers leveraging digital tools to mask their identities. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini presented the statistics in the Legislative Assembly during discussions on state law enforcement performance.
Official records show that 296 extortion complaints were filed in the state up to July 2026, marking an increase over the 253 cases documented during the matching months last year. The debate followed a motion brought forward by INLD lawmakers Aditya Devi Lal and Arjun Chautala.
Address details provided to the House noted that criminal entities operating from abroad routinely use specialized phone apps and network proxy technology to hinder tracing efforts by local police.
“This increase is primarily attributable to the anonymous nature of overseas callers, who use digital applications and other technologies to conceal their identity and location,” declared Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The government affirmed that dedicated units—specifically the STF and ATS—are conducting targeted actions against gangsters and terror-linked offenders. Intelligence agencies continue gathering data on foreign-based callers to neutralize extortion rackets operating within the state.
