Chandigarh, August 27: Inter-state environmental regulators are reviewing a critical pollution report after the Punjab Pollution Control Board uncovered extensive toxic waste accumulation along the Sirsa rivulet and its seasonal tributaries. Authorities confirmed that heavy industrial sludge and municipal waste dumped upstream are moving into the Sutlej river system.
The contamination trail came under official scrutiny following an August 23 site visit to the Ropar headworks, where heavy waste mounds were found obstructing natural water movement. A subsequent joint survey conducted on August 25 across neighboring border sectors in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana confirmed critical environmental non-compliance.
PPCB technical representatives verified that solid waste processing facilities along the riverbank at Kenduwal village in Himachal Pradesh lack adequate containment structures.
“Chemical bottles were found dumped in rivulets in the Marawala and Nawanagar areas. We shall file a report with our counterparts in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh,” declared PPCB Executive Engineer Vipan Jindal regarding hazardous industrial materials discovered along regional water channels.
State officials maintained that immediate preventive action is essential to protect public health, as the Sutlej serves as a primary source for drinking water and agricultural canals throughout the region. The PPCB has asked member secretaries in neighboring states to dismantle illegal dumping routes and enforce environmental regulations strictly.
