Chandigarh, March 18 — Following videos of outsiders scaling the boundary wall near Panjab University’s Gate Number 2 during Holi celebrations on March 14, the university is considering raising the wall’s height across the north campus.
PU’s chief of university security (CUS) Vikram Singh said a proposal had been submitted to the construction branch to increase the wall height to a uniform seven feet, with an additional two to three feet of barbed wire.
The move comes amid growing security concerns, especially after recent visits by the President and Vice-President of India and several political leaders.
The breach occurred along the road between Sector 14 and 15, where gaps in the existing barbed wire allowed easy access. While PU was closed for Holi, Gate 2 was kept open for checking.
Dean students’ welfare Amit Chauhan said a similar proposal was submitted last year for the south campus, which houses several female hostellers, but the UT administration did not respond favorably.
Chauhan added that PU would raise the matter with the administration again and install CCTV cameras at vulnerable points in the meantime.
No action has been taken against the trespassers. Police at Sector 11 station stated that since PU is an academic institution, the incident does not qualify as trespassing.
