Punjab to launch ₹10 lakh universal cashless health scheme on Jan 15

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Jan 4: Punjab will roll out a universal cashless health insurance scheme offering medical coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family from Jan. 15, the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government said Friday after signing an agreement with United India Insurance Company.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) will cover all 65 lakh families in the state, cutting across income groups and employment categories, including government employees and pensioners.

“This scheme aims to provide cashless treatment of up to ₹10 lakh per family per year to every resident of Punjab,” Singh said. “There are no income limits or exclusion criteria.”

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Sanyam Aggarwal, chief executive officer of the State Health Agency, Punjab, and Mathew George, executive director of United India Insurance Company, in the presence of the health minister.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal will formally launch the scheme on Jan. 15, 2026, Singh said.

Under the operational structure, United India Insurance Company will provide insurance coverage of ₹1 lakh per family for all enrolled households. Treatment costs exceeding ₹1 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh will be borne by the State Health Agency on a trust-based model.

The scheme replaces the earlier health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh, which was available only to select beneficiary categories.

Enrollment will be carried out through common service centers using Aadhaar and voter ID cards. Beneficiaries will receive MMSY health cards, while a dedicated helpline will be launched to assist with registration and claims, the minister said.

The scheme follows the Health Benefit Package 2.2, offering coverage under more than 2,000 treatment packages. Patients can avail services at 824 empaneled hospitals, including 212 public hospitals, eight Government of India hospitals and over 600 private facilities. Officials said the hospital network will expand further in the coming months.
