Punjab Yearns over State Rights in Water Management

Baltej Pannu affirms commitment to protecting Punjab’s resources

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, April 16: Baltej Pannu, the Punjab State Media In-charge for the Aam Aadmi Party, stated that recent decisions by the Union Government to modify appointment criteria for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) appear to be an attempt to centralize control over regional water assets. He declared that under the statutory arrangements of 1966 and 1976, these specific positions were intended to represent the state’s interests, and any change could weaken Punjab’s oversight of its natural resources.

The Media In-charge affirmed that the state has already endured significant ecological strain, citing the impact of intensive cultivation on groundwater levels and public health. He asserted that the Bhagwant Mann administration has taken proactive steps to mitigate these issues by revitalizing the canal system. He maintained that the government’s firm stance on water sharing remains unchanged, emphasizing that the state’s needs must be prioritized in any discussions regarding link canals.

Baltej Pannu also addressed the political history of water disputes, stating that past errors by various parties had previously caused unrest. He affirmed that the state government will not permit a repeat of such exploitation and is prepared to challenge any central overreach. He maintained that the administration will continue to work toward making Punjab a hub of efficient irrigation while defending its legal rights at every national forum.
