Solan, March 10: A 10-to-12-minute struggle between a local youth and a young leopard ended with the death of the animal in Arki’s Sarli village on Monday. Pravesh Sharma, an ITI student, was attacked early in the morning while performing routine chores in his fields. In a rare instance of a human prevailing in a man-animal conflict, Sharma was able to smash the animal’s neck and head after a fierce hand-to-hand combat.
The incident has sparked concerns among villagers regarding the safety of the area. Local residents declared that the Forest Department had been informed of the predator’s movement days prior to the attack. According to witnesses, the leopard had shown aggressive behavior earlier that same day, targeting a commuter who was forced to flee on foot.
Forest Department officials, led by Divisional Officer Rajkumar Sharma, inspected the scene and provided financial assistance to the survivor. The department noted that such incidents are often triggered when animals lose their natural forest cover and stray into residential zones.
“This incident took place in the early morning, which reflects the desperation of the young animal,” the Forest Officer asserted during his visit. He stated that the department remains committed to encouraging wildlife to move back toward forest areas through various outreach programs, though he noted that capturing such animals requires specific technical expertise.
As news of the encounter spread, teachers and fellow students at ITI Arki reached out to Sharma to commend his bravery. While the youth is recovering from various scratches, the local administration has stepped in to monitor the area for any further wildlife movement to ensure the safety of the village.
