New Delhi, April 5: A group of men fired six rounds at an SUV and set it on fire in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area on Saturday, allegedly over a Rs 30 lakh dispute tied to a betting racket run by the vehicle’s owner.
Police said around 4 p.m., eight men arrived on motorcycles near Mayur Vihar and ambushed property dealer Sanjay, targeting his parked SUV. The vehicle was unoccupied when the attackers shattered its windows, doused it in petrol, and set it ablaze. They then fled the area, firing into the air to cause panic.
A witness’s father told police, “They shouted things against Sanjay, broke the windows and poured petrol inside the SUV. Even after setting it on fire, they fired shots in the air while fleeing.”
Investigators recovered a handwritten note left behind by the attackers, accusing Sanjay of owing Rs 30 lakh to one of them and threatening further action.
“Sanjay, give me my 30 lakh rupees or stop the betting business in your house. You are getting your son to threaten me… this is not a good thing you are doing,” the note read.
Police confirmed Sanjay is being questioned and statements from witnesses are being recorded. “Efforts are on to trace the suspects,” an official said.
