NEW DELHI, AUGUST 25: India’s entire commercial pilot network could soon face unpredictable, year-round psychoactive substance checks under a strict framework being evaluated by the federal government. The Civil Aviation Ministry confirms that discussions have begun to replace the current fractional testing protocol with a universal system that leaves no pilot exempt from annual random screening.
The policy shift gained immediate traction after a Phuket-to-Delhi Air India flight experienced a sudden loss of altitude mid-flight earlier this month. The pilot in command subsequently failed a drug test, testing positive for cannabis. In immediate response to the incident, Air India and Air India Express bypassed waiting for regulatory updates and launched their own comprehensive, mandatory drug testing programs for all flight crew members.
“There are multiple ways of approaching this dope test,” Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Tuesday, explaining that the DGCA wants to forge a much tougher policy line for the future. “Right now, the rules say 10 per cent across the overall pilot network, but just like I said, DGCA is engaging… One of the opinions from our side is that everyone has to go through it the year at a random time.”
The current rules touch only a fraction of the aviation workforce annually, leaving gaps that safety advocates argue must be closed. While the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau dissects the mechanics of the August 4 flight stability failure, pilot unions are pushing for alternative solutions. The Federation of Indian Pilots recently petitioned the regulator to increase testing targets to 25 per cent while introducing oral fluid testing as a more flexible, complementary method alongside traditional urine screenings.
