Surrey, Nov 3: In a landmark moment for civic representation, 20-year-old Suhana Gill was sworn in as the youngest city councillor in the history of Surrey, British Columbia, on November 2.

The Punjabi-origin political science graduate took the oath of office alongside Mayor Doug McCallum and fellow council members following a campaign centered on key public concerns such as housing affordability, community safety, and youth inclusion.

Gill asserted her academic dedication early, completing high school at age 15 and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Kwantlen Polytechnic University by the age of 19. Beyond her studies, she maintained active involvement in public affairs, youth advocacy, and community outreach.

Her background spans roles with the House of Commons, non-profit organizations, media panels, and real estate, where she gained firsthand insights into local housing accessibility.

Community leaders maintained that Gill’s entry into Surrey’s municipal council marks an encouraging progression for young leaders of Indian origin in public administration abroad.
