Supreme Court defers Hawara transfer plea following IB assessment

Matter scheduled for February hearing as agency raises security and election concerns

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, NOV 3: The Supreme Court on Tuesday postponed the hearing on a petition seeking the transfer of Jagtar Singh Hawara from Tihar Jail to a prison in Punjab, following an assessment submitted by the Intelligence Bureau.

The IB asserted before the court that Hawara remains categorized as a high-risk prisoner and maintained that relocating him to Punjab could affect the administrative and security environment ahead of the state assembly elections.

During the hearing, a Bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and PB Varale observed the security inputs brought to its notice. Responding to the agency’s submission, senior counsel S Muralidhar suggested deferring the proceedings until after the upcoming electoral schedule.

Accepting the submission, the Bench declared that the matter will now be taken up for detailed hearing in February next year.
