Thimphu, July 3 — Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi on Thursday visited the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan, where he was briefed on its crucial role in enhancing India-Bhutan military cooperation, the Indian Army said.
In a post shared by the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), the Army noted that IMTRAT, India’s oldest overseas military mission, continues to be a cornerstone of the strategic partnership between the Indian Army and the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA). The visit underscored the importance of sustained military cooperation and joint capacity-building.
“#GeneralUpendraDwivedi, #COAS visited the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT), #Bhutan… and lauded them for their focused joint training initiatives and leadership development,” ADGPI said in a post on X.
During his interaction with personnel from both armies, Gen. Dwivedi appreciated their efforts in strengthening bilateral ties through rigorous training and shared values in military professionalism.
As part of the visit, the Army Chief also toured the Wangchuk Lo Dzong Military Hospital and the Wangchuk Lo Dzong Military School, where he engaged with instructors and students, acknowledging the significance of military education and healthcare in the broader Indo-Bhutan defence relationship.
In a further outreach initiative, Gen. Dwivedi visited the Jamtsholing Gyaltsen Academy at Tashichhoeling in Samtse, where he was apprised of Bhutan’s Gyalsung National Service programme. He received a detailed briefing on the academy’s training infrastructure and functional modules.
The Indian Army said the COAS’s visit reaffirms India’s commitment to deepening its ties with Bhutan, describing the trip as a reflection of the “enduring friendship and trusted partnership” between the two nations.
