CHANDIGARH, Aug 4 — A public quarrel between a street vendor and his wife near PGIMER’s Nehru Gate spiralled into a violent brawl on Saturday morning, leaving three people injured, including a woman constable. The incident occurred around 11:30 am in one of the hospital’s most crowded areas, triggering panic among visitors.
According to the complaint lodged by Vikrant Yadav (34), a resident of Jind, Haryana, the altercation began when he and his friend Sonu Chaudhary went to the langar area for tea. There, Vikrant noticed a vendor loudly arguing with his wife. As a small crowd gathered, Vikrant attempted to intervene, urging the couple not to fight in public.
However, the situation escalated. “Instead of calming down, the man suddenly turned on me and started hitting me,” Vikrant stated in his complaint. When Sonu tried to step in, another man—reportedly a friend of the vendor—joined the assault, allegedly using sticks. Within minutes, one or two more individuals arrived and began attacking both Vikrant and Sonu, he alleged.
As the clash intensified, Vikrant managed to call the police. A PCR team responded swiftly, with Lady Constable Naveen arriving to control the situation. But the attackers allegedly misbehaved with her and assaulted her, injuring her right hand.
The main accused, identified as street vendor Kishore, fled the scene before police could apprehend him. Before escaping, he allegedly threatened Vikrant with dire consequences if he identified him or his companions to authorities.
All three injured—Vikrant, Sonu, and Constable Naveen—were taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, for medical examination.
A case has been registered under Sections 115(2), 121(1), 132, 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sector 11 police station. Police said efforts are on to trace and arrest Kishore and his associates.
