FIRs to be filed against illegal vendors in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH, Aug. 23 — The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner has directed officers to register FIRs against illegal vendors following allegations of corruption in the Enforcement Department, officials said Saturday.

The directive came during a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee, where the issue of unauthorized street vending was raised. In a separate administrative move, the MC Commissioner ordered the transfer of seven sub-inspectors from the Enforcement Wing, instructing them to report immediately to the establishment branch for further duties. The officers shifted include Ravi, Sahil Bhola, Deepak, Ved Parkash, Nirmal Singh, Rattan Singh, and Arun Garg.

Councillor Saurabh Joshi said illegal street vending constitutes encroachment and a public nuisance. “Under the BNS, police have the authority to register FIRs and prosecute offenders, while MC officials, under the 2014 Act, are empowered to evict, relocate, and penalize unauthorised vendors,” he noted.

Officials said the combined action aims to clear encroachments, streamline enforcement, and curb malpractices in the department.
