Shimla, Sept. 25 — The southwest monsoon began its retreat from Himachal Pradesh on September 24, ending one of the wettest rainy seasons in the state since 1995. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Himachal received 1,024 mm of rainfall this season, 42% above normal.
Senior IMD scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma said, “As of today, September 24, withdrawal has taken place from most parts of the state.” Districts including Chamba, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Sirmaur have seen complete withdrawal, while Shimla and Kullu have withdrawn from most areas with a few pockets remaining. Withdrawal has also started in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur and is expected to be complete within two to three days.
The monsoon arrived in Himachal on June 20, four days earlier than the usual onset on June 24, but this year’s withdrawal occurred on the expected date. District-wise, Shimla recorded the highest deviation with 99% above normal rainfall, nearly double its usual level. Kullu followed at 97%, Bilaspur 79%, Mandi 76%, and Solan 70%. Only Lahaul-Spiti reported below-normal rainfall.
“This year’s rainfall is not record-breaking, but it is significant. Since 1995, this is the second-highest monsoon rainfall in Himachal. In 1995, the state recorded 1,029.5 mm, while this year it is 1,023.4 mm,” Sharma noted.
