EU Expands Sanctions on Russia

by TheReportingTimes

London, Oct 9: The European Union announced a fresh round of sanctions on Russia on Thursday, focusing on the energy sector and high-profile individuals linked to Moscow’s political and economic elite. The move comes as the EU seeks to maintain pressure on Russia over its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, while reducing reliance on Russian fossil fuels.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the sanctions target companies involved in oil and gas, as well as state-backed banks and defence manufacturers. “The EU remains united in supporting Ukraine and in enforcing accountability for violations of international law,” Borrell stated.

In addition, several Russian oligarchs have been added to the EU’s asset freeze list, restricting their access to European markets. Analysts say these measures are designed to weaken Moscow’s financial capabilities while minimizing collateral impact on EU economies.

The new sanctions coincide with intensified diplomatic efforts, including discussions between EU leaders and U.S. officials on coordinated energy alternatives and joint humanitarian support for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the measures, calling them “another step towards justice and support for our people.”
