Chandigarh, 15 October 2025: A fresh twist has emerged in the mysterious death of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, with another police official allegedly dying by suicide within nine days. The post-mortem of Kumar’s body was finally conducted at PGIMER, Chandigarh, on Wednesday after his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, gave consent, ending a week-long standoff.
Family consent came after Chandigarh Police assured a fair and impartial investigation, and the Haryana government promised strict action against any officers found guilty.
The autopsy was conducted by a board of doctors in the presence of an executive magistrate, along with ballistic, toxicology, forensic, and fingerprint experts. Videography and photography were arranged to ensure full transparency, officials said.
Kumar, 52, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his official residence in Chandigarh on October 7. His family had earlier refused the post-mortem, demanding action against officers named in his eight-page “final note,” in which he accused eight senior IPS officers — including former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya — of caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and public humiliation.
Following the uproar, DGP Kapur was sent on leave and SP Bijarniya was transferred. The Chandigarh Police also set up a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
Meanwhile, in a startling development, ASI Sandeep Kumar, posted in Rohtak, allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday. In a note, he purportedly accused the late IPS officer Puran Kumar of corruption, adding a complex layer to an already charged investigation.
Earlier this week, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Kumar’s family in Chandigarh and demanded justice, alleging “systematic discrimination” against the officer. Several Dalit groups and opposition parties have since held protests demanding arrests of the accused officers.
Amneet P Kumar said she had “full faith in the judiciary and police” and would extend complete cooperation to ensure a time-bound, impartial probe into her husband’s death.
