Chandigarh, Dec 15: With Shatrujeet Kapur divested of the DGP charge, the Haryana government is preparing to appoint a new head of police following the retirement of OP Singh on December 31.
The state has sent a proposal containing the records of five IPS officers — including Kapur — to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which will form a panel of three candidates for the state to select the next DGP. The UPSC noted that a vacancy will exist only if Kapur does not return from leave, adding observations based on Supreme Court directions on police reforms.
While Kapur’s name will be part of the empanelment proposal, officials say the UPSC may not select him in the panel of three, citing precedents. In 2021, then-incumbent DGP Manoj Yadava was excluded from a panel after he declined the post, despite being eligible.
Kapur, however, has not expressed any unwillingness to be considered. The other officers proposed for UPSC vetting are Sanjeev Kumar Jain (1991 batch), Ajay Singhal (1992 batch), and Alok Mittal and Arshinder Chawla (both 1993 batch).
“The process is being carried out as per the apex court’s directions. Once the UPSC sends its panel, the state will select the new DGP,” said a senior Home Department official, requesting anonymity.
