Amritsar, January 10: Nearly six months after the Vigilance Bureau arrested senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Amritsar police have taken into custody one of his supporters for allegedly interfering with the arrest process, officials said.
The accused, identified as Davinder Singh Verka, was arrested by the Civil Lines police for his alleged role in obstructing a Vigilance Bureau team during the June 25 arrest of Majithia from his Green Avenue residence in Amritsar.
According to police sources, Verka allegedly disrupted the vigilance team’s work and attempted to create hurdles when officials from Mohali arrived to execute the arrest in a disproportionate assets case. Police have yet to make an official confirmation regarding the arrest.
During the June operation, a large gathering of Akali Dal supporters had assembled outside Majithia’s residence. Police had stated that the crowd raised slogans, attempted to block officials, and created a tense law and order situation.
“Barricades had to be installed around the residence to control the crowd and allow the Vigilance Bureau team to proceed safely,” a senior police official said.
The Civil Lines police had earlier registered a case against Majithia and several of his supporters on charges related to obstruction of government officials and disruption of public order.
