New Delhi, March 4: Broadcasting records have been dismantled during the current T20 World Cup as the event reached a historic milestone of 500 million viewers in India. The announcement, made by ICC Chairman Jay Shah on Wednesday, highlights a significant shift in the global sports landscape, driven by massive digital participation and a record-setting television audience.

The tournament has outperformed the 2024 edition well before its conclusion. While the previous Champions Trophy in 2025 saw a peak of 122 million on television, the current World Cup has already seen a digital peak of 60.5 million concurrent users on a single streaming platform. Jay Shah affirmed that these figures represent the fulfillment of the ICC’s goal to create a truly “global and accessible” sporting spectacle.

“I am humbled that viewership for the event in India has crossed 500 million,” Shah stated, adding that this is the highest ever recorded for any T20 World Cup. He asserted that the figures reflect the deep connection fans have with the sport, particularly as the tournament enters its critical knockout phase.

The event, which commenced on February 7, has utilized the joint hosting strengths of India and Sri Lanka to maximize regional engagement. Experts stated that the strategic scheduling and high-quality production have contributed to the record-breaking watch-time. With two semifinals and a grand final still to be played, the ICC expects a further surge in domestic and international ratings.

Shah maintained his optimism for the upcoming matches, declaring, “We hope that the immeasurable love our events receive from Indian fans helps break more records.” The competition is scheduled to conclude on March 8, by which time analysts suggest the final viewership tally could set a benchmark that remains unchallenged for years.
