Washington pitches for deeper energy ties with New Delhi

New Delhi, March 5: The United States has urged India to explore alternative energy sources to mitigate risks associated with the escalating crisis in Iran. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, while attending the Raisina Dialogue, stated that the US remains the most viable partner for meeting India’s growing energy requirements.

The diplomat noted that the rise of India as a major global power in the 21st century is a development Washington views with great importance. He maintained that the two countries should deepen cooperation across economic and security domains to ensure a stable Middle East that no longer poses a threat to international commerce.

“The new government that will be formed will have my full cooperation and guidance,” Mr. Landau stated, referring to the collaborative efforts needed to stabilize regional transition.

On the issue of nuclear proliferation, the Deputy Secretary affirmed that a nuclear-armed Iran remains a grave risk that the US is committed to preventing. He asserted that while the political future of Iran rests with its people, the immediate priority for partners like India and the US should be securing the global energy supply chain.

“Washington was ready to work with India to ensure stable energy supplies in both the short and long term,” he declared.

Mr. Landau also noted that a bilateral trade agreement is “close to the finish line,” suggesting that the deal would provide a robust framework for future technology and investment exchanges. He stated that the current global volatility makes the economic and strategic convergence between New Delhi and Washington more vital than ever.
