Chandigarh, April 23: Citing concerns over the glorification of violence, the Punjab Police has demanded that the Central Government block the upcoming web series ‘Lawrence of Punjab’. The Special DGP of Cyber Crime noted that the promotional material and the series itself, set to debut on ZEE5 this month, pose a significant threat to the state’s peaceful environment.
The communication sent to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting affirmed that the show focuses on the criminal trajectory of Lawrence Bishnoi. The letter declared that by portraying the rise of a gangster and recreating sensitive criminal events, the series risks inciting unrest among the public. Officials asserted that the portrayal of such figures often leads to the romanticization of crime among impressionable youth.
Parallel to the request sent to the Center, the Punjab Police has asked the Punjab and Haryana High Court to intervene. Legal representatives stated that a ban is necessary to preserve public interest and prevent the potential disruption of harmony. The move follows a petition by Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who sought judicial intervention to stop the broadcast.
Authorities maintained that the state remains vigilant regarding content that may trigger social friction. The police department asserted that blocking the series from the OTT platform is a proactive measure to ensure that criminal narratives do not undermine law and order or influence social behavior in a negative capacity.
