CHANDIGARH, May 1 — The Bhagwant Mann administration’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has transformed orthopedic treatment in Punjab, according to recent data showing 4,600 knee replacements completed in a single quarter. Government representatives stated Thursday that the scheme is effectively addressing the state’s burden of osteoarthritis by making high-end surgeries accessible to the common man at no cost.

The program has been particularly beneficial for elderly residents like 67-year-old Paramjit Kaur, whose mobility had been severely restricted for a year. Her son, Jaswinder Singh, affirmed that discovering the scheme online was a turning point for the family. “I learnt about the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana online. Once we registered, the surgery was done,” he stated. He maintained that the assistance from hospital staff made the process seamless.

Health experts stated that the replacement of damaged joint surfaces with metal and plastic components is now a routine reality for thousands. Dr. Karan Chopra, a surgeon at the Barnala Civil Hospital, declared that the removal of the ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh price tag has encouraged a “surge” in hip and knee cases. He affirmed that the simplicity of the registration process has played a critical role in this transition.

“Now after surgery, I feel very happy. Sehat card has given me my life back,” stated Sukhwinder Kaur, another beneficiary of the program. She maintained that her previous struggle to take even a few steps has been replaced by a renewed ability to move freely.

Beyond the surgical numbers, the initiative is being recognized for its role in restoring the dignity of senior citizens. In Tarn Taran, relatives of patients stated that the ability to access treatment at district hospitals and institutions like AIIMS Bathinda without financial worry has been the scheme’s greatest success. They affirmed that the government’s focus on mobility is helping thousands of Punjab’s residents regain their independence.
