Chennai, May 5: The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is transitioning toward a shared governance model as Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam gathers the numbers required to form a government. By securing the cooperation of the Congress and various smaller parties, TVK aims to surpass the 118-seat majority requirement through a collaborative legislative bloc.
The current mathematical path to power relies on 11 MLAs from the Congress, VCK, and Communist parties. This coalition would mark the end of the traditionally centralized political structures dominated by a single party. Beyond these core partners, TVK is looking toward the DMDK and the Indian Union Muslim League to provide a more robust cushion for the new ministry.
Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of the VCK, stated that his party is open to the idea of coalition governance under a secular framework. This openness has sparked informal talks regarding a departure from previous alliances. Because most TVK legislators lack prior government experience, the inclusion of veteran figures and external experts has become a priority for the incoming leadership.
Sources maintained that the TVK plans to induct former bureaucrat U Sagayam into the administration via a by-election in Tiruchi East to leverage his reputation for integrity. Under the current timeline, Vijay is expected to be affirmed as the legislative party leader before the weekend. “A shift away from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance by some of these parties remains a possibility,” an official noted, as the state prepares for a government driven by consensus and inter-party cooperation.
