Safety of Sikh drivers questioned after New York roadside attack

Community leaders cite pattern of violence following assault on elderly cab driver

by TheReportingTimes

NEW YORK, MAY 6 — Advocates for the Sikh community are calling for enhanced safety measures for taxi and rideshare drivers following a disturbing assault on a senior driver in New York City. The attack, documented in a viral video, shows the driver being shoved to the ground by an unidentified individual following a verbal argument on the side of the road.

According to witnesses and social media reports, the assailant confronted the driver over an alleged traffic incident. The attacker was heard affirming his intent to use violence before the elderly man was thrown to the ground. Although the driver was injured during the encounter, community members stated that he is safe and receiving support.

“Sikh organizations have condemned the attack and expressed concern over the safety of elderly members of the community, especially those engaged in public work such as taxi driving,” a community representative stated. They maintained that the repetitive nature of such assaults, including a recent unprovoked attack on Shingara Singh in Canada late last month, points to a troubling trend that requires immediate law enforcement attention.

No arrests have been announced in connection with the New York incident, though pressure is mounting for a high-level investigation. Local leaders affirmed that they are working to provide the driver with legal and emotional assistance while urging the public to come forward with any information. They declared that the community will continue to advocate for the protection of its elders and for the strict application of the law against those who target vulnerable immigrants.
