Eligibility Dispute Intensifies as Vinesh Phogat Challenges WFI Participation Ban

Federation Demands Full Accountability for Past Disciplinary and Doping-Related Violations

GONDA, MAY 11 — The ongoing standoff between Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India reached a critical juncture on Monday as the wrestler reached the site of the National Open Ranking tournament to demand her right to compete. While Vinesh submitted a legal justification for her return to the sport, WFI representatives declared the response “incomplete” and maintained the suspension on her domestic participation.

The dispute hinges on whether Vinesh adhered to the six-month cooling-off period required for athletes coming out of retirement. Vinesh asserted that she had already satisfied these requirements through formal channels with United World Wrestling (UWW). She maintained that the WFI’s attempt to block her entry into the tournament, which serves as a gateway for World Championship trials, is a targeted action.

“The bravery and valor displayed while protecting the principles of the sport should guide these decisions,” supporters of the athlete affirmed, while Vinesh herself focused on the technicalities of the WADA Code. She stated that her eligibility should be recognized based on her June notification to the UWW, which she declared covers the mandatory waiting period.

The WFI, however, stated that the eligibility issue is only one of several serious charges the wrestler must answer. The federation’s show-cause notice includes allegations of “whereabouts failures”—a serious anti-doping violation—and questions regarding her conduct during the March 2024 trials. Officials asserted that the athlete’s reply failed to provide a comprehensive explanation for these specific points of indiscipline.

“Until we have a full explanation, and not just on one issue, she has to wait,” a federation official stated. He declared that allowing an athlete to compete while under a cloud of disciplinary charges would undermine the federation’s rules and the integrity of the selection process.

The WFI further maintained that it is following established policy, noting that medal winners at the Gonda event would qualify for World Championship trials but not for the Asian Games, as per current guidelines. As the weigh-in deadline approached on Monday, the federation affirmed that no exception would be made for Vinesh until the disciplinary committee reviews her case in its entirety. They stated that the burden of proof regarding her “whereabouts” and past trial conduct rests solely with the wrestler.
