IMD Forecasts Renewed Storm Activity for Tricity Region

CHANDIGARH, May 12 — Following widespread morning showers, the Chandigarh tricity remains under a weather watch as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of another round of thunderstorms and high-velocity winds on Tuesday. Officials stated that a yellow alert was activated at 11:30 a.m. after radar observations confirmed the movement of active rain-bearing clouds toward the urban centers of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula.

The weather office maintained that the region should prepare for wind gusts ranging from 50 to 60 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 70 kmph in isolated areas. This follows an earlier round of rain at 5 a.m. that briefly disrupted the early morning commute. According to the IMD, Chandigarh’s 4.2 mm rainfall was among the highest in the Punjab and Haryana region on Tuesday morning, second only to Pathankot.

“Residents should move to safer places and avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorm activity,” an IMD representative stated. The department affirmed that the prevailing Western Disturbance will continue to trigger sporadic rain and lightning across the plains of North India until May 15. Officials noted that the moisture from this system has provided partial relief from the summer heat, with maximum temperatures currently hovering around 35°C to 38°C across the tricity.

Forecasters stated that the weather will begin to stabilize toward the end of the week. The intensity of the alerts is scheduled to be downgraded starting Thursday, leading to a dry weekend. Meteorologists affirmed that once the Western Disturbance exits the region, a significant heat spike is anticipated, with temperatures likely to breach 40°C by Saturday afternoon.
