Chemists Call 24-Hour Strike Across Punjab Against E-Pharmacies

Local medicine shops claim digital platforms bypass prescription safety checks

Chandigarh, May 19: A massive pharmacy strike will halt the distribution of commercial medicines across Punjab on Wednesday, targeting the rising popularity of web-based drug dispensaries.

The collective action, supported by tens of thousands of regional distributors, is designed to highlight the economic strain caused by corporate e-pharmacy platforms. Protesting merchants declared that standard brick-and-mortar pharmacies cannot match the aggressive pricing models of online corporations, threatening the survival of local healthcare retailers.

Organizers acknowledged that the complete closure of high-street shops will likely cause temporary disruptions for individuals seeking daily maintenance medications or emergency prescriptions. However, the association maintained that essential institutional pharmacies will preserve their round-the-clock operations to prevent hardships for critical hospital units.

“Pharmacies inside hospitals are participating voluntarily as admitted patients require round the clock medicine supply,” asserted GS Chawla, president of the Ludhiana District Chemist Association.

In addition to economic grievances, the striking pharmacists are demanding a more rigorous regulatory framework to halt the online sale of substandard or counterfeit medical supplies. The group also expressed frustration over secondary bureaucratic issues, criticizing the regional pharmacy council for demanding repetitive verifications of educational certificates that have already been renewed multiple times.

While cities like Ludhiana expect total compliance from local medicine providers, other commercial hubs anticipate a more fractured response. Industry monitors in Jalandhar indicated that a sizable contingent of merchants within the city’s largest pharmaceutical market may choose to stay open due to their own existing involvement in regional e-commerce networks
