Amritsar, July 10: A targeted attack on a family home has led to a direct gunfight between the Amritsar Rural Police and a criminal suspect, resulting in the suspect being shot and apprehended. Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Jotisar Mohalla, was taken into custody after a brief shootout left him with a bullet wound to his leg. The police action comes exactly a day after gunmen opened fire at a residence in Sheikhupura Mohalla, a crime that officials say was orchestrated from within a prison cell.
The high-stakes arrest unfolded on a rural road where police officers had established a dragnet to intercept the fleeing suspect. Deputy Superintendent of Police Baljit Singh declared that the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team when signalled to stop. The police retaliated in self-defence, hitting the suspect in his right leg, before recovering a weapon, ammunition, and his motorcycle from the scene of the encounter.
The investigation revealed that the violence was a spillover from a clash that took place just days earlier inside a correctional facility. Officials maintained that the firing was linked to a dispute between two jail inmates in the Amritsar Central Jail. The dispute involved inmates Baljit Singh and Sawaran Singh, the latter of whom allegedly directed external gang members to launch the retaliatory strike against his rival’s family home in Jandiala Guru.
The suspect’s arrest marks a breakthrough for local law enforcement, who are tracking a broader network of organized criminals. Police records showed that Lovepreet is a repeat offender with nine prior criminal cases registered against him. Authorities asserted that the remaining suspects have been formally named in the investigation, and ongoing raids are being conducted to dismantle the rest of the network involved in the conspiracy.
