MUMBAI, AUGUST 12 — Search and rescue operations intensified in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs after heavy downpours triggered a massive landslide at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, resulting in two confirmed deaths and several injuries. The disaster destroyed multiple row tenements in the early hours of Wednesday, trapping several occupants beneath mud and concrete fragments.
Disaster management units quickly established a perimeter around the Ghatkopar site following initial confusion regarding the location, which municipal authorities originally placed in adjacent Kurla. Rescuers safely extracted two injured residents, eighteen-year-old Sohel Ansari and fourteen-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who were transported to medical facilities alongside two recovered victims.
Addressing the emergency response efforts, official authorities affirmed that public safety crews are utilizing specialized gear to locate missing occupants trapped beneath the shifted ground.
“Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operations are underway,” declared Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde. “Police personnel have been deployed at the spot along with all necessary teams for the rescue operation, including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies.”
He maintained that torrential monsoon rainfall destabilized the elevated ground behind the residential stretch, leading to the collapse. Personnel from the police, local municipal administration, and specialized disaster management squads remain on active duty at Chirag Nagar as rescue operations continue.
